What is peritoneal dialysis (PD)?

Date: July 15th, 2024
Categories: Dialysis, General knowledge

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) utilizes the peritoneum as natural filter to cleanse the blood of waste products.

A soft tube, or catheter, is surgically inserted into the abdominal wall to facilitate this process. The catheter remains permanently in place, allowing dialysis fluid to enter the abdominal cavity and absorb waste and excess fluid from the blood.

After several hours, the used dialysis fluid is drained, and fresh fluid is introduced. This process of removing and replacing fluid is known as an exchange.
